On June 7, 2015, 2,000 triathletes from around the globe descended on San Francisco for one chance to attempt the impossible – ESCAPE from Alcatraz.
Featuring a 1.5-mile swim from Alcatraz Island, a grueling 18-mile bike ride, and a demanding 8-mile run through the trails of the Golden Gate Recreational Area, the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon attracts World Champions, Olympic Medalists and the best amateur triathletes from 50 states and over 40 countries, and CYTOMAX® and MUSCLE MILK® were there as the official on course and post-race nutrition.
As part of the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon, Muscle Milk® created a Collegiate Challenge as part of the effort to introduce the sport of Triathlon to younger athletes.
The Collegiate Challenge is a competition between teams from various Colleges and Universities competing for the title of Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon Collegiate Champions. Teams of 5 are scored in their proper race division with the fastest averaged winning.
Each team is provided with pre-race training support, a race bag with goodies and special prizes for the winning team. A pro triathlete leads a pre-race seminar giving the athletes perspective on the race, as well as life after college.
Teams from USC, University of California Berkeley, Stanford, University of Texas and the University of Colorado have competed in the Collegiate Challenge. The University of California, Berkeley was the Collegiate Challenge winner in 2014 and 2015 and will look to defend the title in their backyard in 2016.
